That means using nothing but the best tech – found with Endless Surf – and surrounding the lagoon with beachside hospitality, a wellness studio, skateable landscaping, luxury surf villas and more. All within walking distance of breathtaking scenery, coastal walks and cycling trails.
We’re working closely with local experts across design, planning, architecture and hospitality to create a unique experience that seamlessly blends with the character of the Fleurieu coast, showcases the best of local and delivers a uniquely South Australian surfing experience.

2.1+ metre high A-framed lefts and rights pulse out up to every 10 seconds. Almost any wave shape or type you can dream of. Combined with progressive lagoon design, the technology allows unlimited flexibility in wave type and creates distinct wave zones – the main wave at the peak and a secondary reform wave for beginners. All ages and abilities are welcome in our crew.
It’s as if the swell, tides and stars aligned and the only spot you have to check is 40 minutes from the Adelaide CBD.

THE TECH
Next generation wave machine technology delivered by Endless Surf.
Like swell in the ocean, waves are created with air and pressure. Endless Surf technology integrates a series of pneumatic chambers that are customised with one another to deliver high quality waves for all abilities.
The surfing lagoon offers different wave heights in different zones, allowing for surfers of different competencies to be accommodated at the same time. One pulse of swell energy will typically break across both the primary and secondary wave zone and produce four surfable waves, every 10+ seconds.
So, whether you want to surf a 2.1m+ wave or learn on something gentler, you'll have your moment in the surf.

35 one- and two-bedroom surf villas line the southern side of the lagoon, seamlessly blending with the natural landscape. The rugged, raw and uniquely beautiful landscape of the Fleurieu Peninsula has informed the design of The Break - from natural materiality and native vegetation to architecture inspired by the cliffs and coastline.
We're also located in one of the world's most sought-after food and wine regions, so we're set to give visitors an authentic taste of SA by working with local food, wine and craft beer producers.
SUSTAINABILITY
Surfing is intrinsically linked to the ocean and environment and sustainability has been a guiding principle for The Break.
Water is to be renewably sourced and reused by managed aquifer recharge, with water sensitive design throughout. Energy is sourced through Greenpower – to say nothing of the efficiencies that come with using best-in-class wave technology from Endless Surf. Extensive greenery and native landscaping are set to improve the site’s biomass and diversity, with over 50% of the site landscaped.
In every aspect, The Break has been designed to thoughtfully integrate with the local environment and surfing community.

Our place is at Aldinga, between Maslin Beach and Port Willunga, on the traditional lands of the Kaurna people.
It’s perfectly positioned between two thriving surf communities, but still set back from the pristine coastline. It’s the gateway to some of the state’s most beloved tourism regions. And it’s just 40 minutes from the Adelaide CBD.
We had to find the perfect spot for The Break, because what we’re creating is all about a sense of place. It’s about bringing people together to enjoy a unique experience, and then encouraging them to explore – from the wineries of McLaren Vale to the hidden beaches and restaurants of the mid coast.

The Break will span approximately 7 ha on the corner of Tuit Road and Bowering Hill Road, Aldinga. It sits on a parcel of vacant land that has been zoned for tourism development.
This location is perfectly situated within South Australia’s world renowned Fleurieu Peninsula, a stone’s throw from the McLaren Vale wine region, a short drive from Adelaide and central to two of SA’s main surfing communities.

The Break has partnered with a global leader in wave technology, Endless Surf. Cutting edge pneumatic wave generating technology creates high quality surfing waves approximately 2.1m high for up to 70 participants each hour.
The technology allows for the curation of specialty and custom wave profiles to suit operational, and surfer demands.
The Break intends to be the first in the Southern Hemisphere with this next-gen technology.

Short, long or boogie. Kook or Kelly. There’s a wave for everyone.
Endless Surf’s pneumatic technology provides definitive control on wave types like no other. We will be able to dial up any kind of wave you can imagine from perfect malibu cruiser waves to point break waves, back door barrels or air sections suitable for the most progressive surfers. And waves we haven’t even imagined yet.
Typically, the surf lagoon will operate with different zones for different abilities. The ‘main wave’ zone will provide split peak (left and right hand) variable waves of approximately 2.1+ metres in height, approximately 9 seconds long. Wave types include barrelling waves, intermediate walls, and aerial sections allowing all levels of surfing.
The ‘secondary wave’ zone produces gentle reformed waves of approximately 0.6 metres in height. This zone is well suited for both surfing lessons and free-surfing sessions. The length, consistency and frequency of waves may enable beginners to learn to surf in a far more efficient timeframe as compared to learning in the ocean.
Alternatively, an extended single peak format can be created by linking all chambers together in synchronicity allows a surfer to take off at one end of the pool and surf the entire length of the energy generation wall, approximately 120m for a ride length of approximately 18 seconds, either as left hand or right-hand waves.
All types of board riding craft can be accommodated in the surf lagoon including short boards, longboards, body boards and stand-up paddle boards.

The local Fleurieu and surfing communities have been at the heart of the design process for The Break, and that will remain the case as we make this pipe dream a reality. We can’t wait to see locals using not just the surf lagoon, but the many amenities and facilities at The Break and surrounding area.
This new tourism offering is set to create unique benefits for the region and the state, attracting new visitors and unlocking new surf tourism opportunities. As the project takes shape, we look forward to sharing new supplier and employment opportunities with the community.
We’re also committed to working with local community groups, surf clubs and more to help foster active communities and grow surfing in South Australia.

It is anticipated that The Break project will support 300 jobs through construction, with around 60 FTE opportunities on completion. An estimated 320,000 visitors will be attracted to The Break annually, enhancing the region’s already thriving tourism economy.

Since obtaining our initial planning consent, we have been working to refine our plans in line with input from contractors and feedback from residents. The Break has now submitted updated plans to the City of Onkaparinga for planning assessment. We have secured a $5 million loan from the State Government through the Economic Recovery Fund’s Regional Tourism Infrastructure Development stream. We have engaged a leading builder and have completed detailed design and costing and subject to planning consent is near shovel ready!

Environmental sustainability has been integral to all design considerations at The Break. Water, power and native vegetation are three of the core areas we’re looking at.

The water for our surf lagoon will be sourced responsibly and managed with a strong commitment to sustainability.
The Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) process we are using is a licensed and regulated approach overseen by the Department for Environment and Water (via a permit to Drain and Discharge). MAR is a recognised and sustainable method for managing groundwater resources, ensuring responsible use and quality control.
The groundwater we abstract is naturally migrating towards the ocean and would otherwise be lost. Water in the surf lagoon is filtered and disinfected with chlorine at a concentration of approximately 1mg/L. Chlorine is highly volatile and degrades quickly in sunlight. Before any water is reinjected into the aquifer, it undergoes rigorous quality monitoring to ensure compliance with all relevant environmental standards, including the Australian and New Zealand Guidelines for Fresh and Marine Water.

The Fleurieu is renowned for its beaches, but the availability of good quality surf is scarce and limited to a handful of occasions each year. The Break will never replace those epic days in the ocean, but it will make this iconic Australian past time more accessible, safe and convenient. We liken it to the introduction of the chairlift to the ski-sports industry – more access, more often, for more people.

The Break will offer options to surf for an hour at a time or a whole day. We’re prioritising affordability because we want everyone to feel like they can keep coming back. As part of this, The Break will offer a number of tailored memberships, learn to surf and progression programs.
A rental centre will feature over 300 boards and wetsuits including the latest performance boards from the best shapers, allowing you to dial your hardware in. Hone your skills at our onsite surf academy or recharge between surfs in the wellness space – including a pay per use yoga studio, treatment rooms and more.
Not surfing? Come and watch the world-class surf for free from our licensed beach club, or get up close and enjoy quality lagoon side amenities with General Admission access. This area has something for everyone – The Break will feature swimming pools, cabanas, surf-skate ramps and nature play areas for the groms.
