New plans for The Break Surf & Stay have today achieved planning consent, with the City of Onkaparinga Council Assessment Panel (CAP) approving revised design and operations including:

  • Central ~12,000sqm wave lagoon catering for up to 64 surfers at a time

  • Cutting edge pneumatic wave technology by Endless Surf producing waves up to 2.1m high

  • Surf academy to serve local community groups, schools, families and surfers of all levels; plus surf shop and rental

  • Boutique cabin accommodation, wellness facilities and lagoonside amenities

  • Beach club serving local coffee, beers, wines and produce

  • Thoughtfully placed lighting to align with low-lying built form

  • Revised opening hours in line with seasonal surfing times

  • Regionally inspired architecture by award-winning Studio Gram.

The vision for The Break has been developed by a passionate project team with input from best-in-class South Australian contractors. Private investment in the project has been complemented by a $5 million loan through the State Government’s Business Growth Fund (Regional Tourism Infrastructure Development). First waves are pencilled in for the summer of 2027/28.

Attributable to a spokesperson for The Break:

“We are pleased to have received planning consent for our updated plans, confirming that our refreshed vision for The Break suits not only our parcel of tourism-zoned land but the wider region and its thriving tourism landscape.

“At every stage of the design and planning process, we have worked tirelessly to ensure The Break reflects global best practice while aligning with broader community expectations.

“Although that means the process has taken longer than expected, it also means our designs have been refined to a point where we’re on track to be shovel ready and the results are set to be outstanding.

“We thank the local community for their patience and their unwavering support – we see the supporter groups and thousands of comments on social media, and we can’t wait to get The Break underway so that the Mid Coast can enjoy safe, reliable surf, new employment and a world-class tourism drawcard.”
